Radio Tagging or Confinement- Choose Your Pick
It's everywhere in the news. In fact, after the big Kirpan debate, the "hip and happening" radio tagging (as Juliet Wur, Public Affairs Officer at the US Consulate in Hyderabad termed it) of Indian  students is not just an inhuman act by the US but violation of Human Rights, as External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and majority of the Indian population deems.

As law abiding citizens, all of us support implementation of security measures but not many of EngageIndia users agree with US' justification that there is exists a cultural gap when it comes to understanding radio tagging in India.

Majority of our users have argued that in this modern day and age, a country like US certainly can't be lacking behind when it comes to electronic monitoring. They could have definitely found a better option to radio tagging, something that didn't require treating the Indians students like criminals.

While many NRIs who have participated in our discussion forums strongly feel the humiliating incident just mirrors the colonial mindset of US, they believe that radio tagging just crosses the boundaries of a democratic nation theory.

US, on the other hand has justified its stand saying radio tagging is a "standard procedure for a variety of investigations, and does not necessarily imply guilt or suspicion of criminal activity," with the State Department issuing a lengthy statement elucidating that the use of ankle monitor "is a positive alternative to confinement during a pending investigation."

Whilst radio tagging in India implies criminality, in the US the practice is used to offer freedom of movement instead of confinement during investigation. In fact, even many celebrities and public figures in the US have been radio tagged pending investigations.

EngageIndia being a 'Global Portal for Indians' requests all Indians, in the country as well as abroad to come forward and put forth their views and share their opinions on the subject through our universal dais.

Thank You,
Team, EngageIndia.com
